Year One STL: Billy Goat Chip Company

Dr. Fiance and I moved to St. Louis on July 1, 2010. It is hard to believe that we are coming up on our first anniversary in Missouri. In honor of this first year I am going to be publishing a series of posts about the things that we have come to love about St. Louis.

As I write these blog posts about the things that have really said “home” to us here in St. Louis, I am finding that thus far there is a counterpoint to each subject either from my childhood in PA or from my adulthood in New York. At the risk of going off on another childhood nostalgia trip, I’ll just mention that the potato chip of choice in my household growing up was Utz, which were (and are still) made in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Over the years the red and white bags with the creepy, rosy-cheeked Utz girl on it were part of most cookouts and family get-togethers. Here in St. Louis, our go-to chip comes from the Billy Goat Chip Co.

Billy Goat Chips aren’t as easy to find as the main stream chips, but it is worth spending the extra time looking for them. From their website: “With the same legendary stubbornness as the Billy Goat, we have a commitment to craft a hand selected, sliced, seasoned and packaged potato chip of the highest quality for the uncompromising consumer.” And it certainly shows. These chips are very crispy and light with an interesting salty-spice flavor. The are a great accompaniment to sandwiches or as a salty bar food with a nice cocktail.

Billy Goat Chips aren’t cheap – a 16oz bag will run you about $8 bucks. But you get a whole lotta chips in that bag, and they certainly won’t go to waste. Apparently you can buy them in 3 pound bags for events and parties (although we’ve never done it). Their list of places to buy Billy Goat Potato Chips get bigger every day. More and more restaurants are using them instead of the big brand chips too, which I think is totally rockin.
