Still Road Tripping

My southwest road trip with dad continues, we are now almost a week in. We are still in Yuma where I am currently mayor of the RV park that we are staying in (thank you Foursquare). We are having a great time. As a guy who has taken very few vacations in his adult life, and never a road trip, here are some of the things that I am learning about myself:

1. The beauty of the south west is breathtaking. Seriously, an East coast boy like me has never been exposed to this kind of terrain and I can’t get enough of it. Between that and the warm weather, I can understand why people come down here to retire.
2. There are a lot of retirees around. Hilarious to be the youngest in a group listening to the 70 year olds complain about how the 90 year olds can’t drive.
3. Turns out I’m bad at blogging while on the road too. Sorry about that. I was hoping to have thoughtful and interesting posts every night, but you know what? I’ve been sleeping at night. These 70 year olds have more stamina than I do. I am exhausted every night.
4. Speaking of driving, I love to drive jeeps off road in the desert. I herby apologize to all of the rednecks in giant dirt splattered pickup trucks I’ve hitherto made fun of. Driving in dirt is FUN. At least in the desert around Yuma it is.
5. Mexico just south of Yuma is full of tourist junk. Duh. I did buy some tequila though.
6. I am a terrible snapshot photographer. I kinda knew this before, but on this trip I’ve found that I’m really bad at taking pictures while I am on vacation. Since I don’t vacation much I don’t know how to pack my gear for casual use – I packed like I was going on assignment. Main thing is I’m getting sick of my pocket camera which just doesn’t perform with the quality that I’m used to but I don’t have a safe or convenient way to carry my slr. What I Really need is a small shoulder bag. Poor planning on my part. Of course, I love to buy camera bags, so that’ll be on my list when I get home.
7. I am taking a few rolls of film with my Holga for laughs, but I won’t be able to share those until I get home and develop the film.
8. The food out here is hit or miss, although overall good. Yesterday I had a lunch special at the oldest remaining pool hall in the state. That lunch special, or the “Especial” was what exactly? A hamburger and a hotdog on the same bun. Delicious.

Periodic postings will happen over the next week and then I’ll be back to my regular food postings when I get back to St. Louis. In the meantime: Dunes!
